In the spring of 1944, towards the end of the war, people were bracing themselves for the bombing of Helsinki. The members of the Finnish Lotta Svärd women’s paramilitary group kept watch from Hotel Torni’s highest landing each night for 6 months. “There were always two of us there, keeping watch. Luckily, our day job at Yhtyneet Kuvalehdet Oy publishing house was very close on Bulevardi. This made our work easier because in the mornings we could go straight to work after our night-watch.”
